What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the condition consisting of the inflammation or infection of the paranasal sinuses caused by infection from a multitude of issues including bacterial, fungal, viral, allergic or autoimmune.

Sinusitis may be either acute or chronic. Acute sinusitis is based on duration and normally lasts less than four weeks. Chronic sinusitis normally goes on for 12 weeks or more.

What are the causes of acute and chronic sinusitis?

Acute sinusitis is usually precipitated by an upper respiratory infection, usually of viral origin. Bacterial, fungal, and chemical infections can also cause acute sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis is normally caused by complicated spectrum of diseases that share chronic inflammation of the sinuses in common. Chronic sinusitis is divided into cases with nasal polyps and cases without nasal polyps. The case with nasal polyps sometimes referred to as chronic hyperplastic sinusitis. Causes are allergic and non-allergic.

What are symptoms of sinusitis?

Symptoms include: nasal congestion; facial pain; headache; fever; general malaise; thick green or yellow discharge; vertigo or lightheadedness; blurred vision, feeling of facial 'fullness' or 'tightness' which worsens on bending over; aching teeth, and halitosis.
